This archived FAQ explains who conducted the survey, how community feedback will be used, and how the survey protected participant information.

Who conducted the survey?

A student research team under the direction of Dr. Frank Chi conducted the survey as part of a local quality improvement project focused on recreation access in Elliot Lake. NOSM University and Elliot Lake physicians sponsored the research.

What did the survey try to understand?

The project examined how recent recreation facility disruptions have affected physical activity, social connection, well-being, and access to recreation. It also asked about the barriers to recreation that residents faced and what could make participation easier.

How will the responses be used?

Responses will be reviewed to identify current recreation priorities and guide practical supports for Elliot Lake residents. Results may also be used in academic publications. Any published results will present responses in aggregate and will not identify individual participants.

How was survey data kept safe?

The survey was configured to collect anonymous responses, so the research team could not identify participants when reviewing the data. Participants were asked not to enter their name, health card number, medical record number, or other identifying personal information, including in written answers. Published results will be aggregated so individual participants cannot be identified, even indirectly. Contact information for people interested in future research was collected through a separate form rather than as part of this survey. All data is securely stored on digital systems at St. Joseph's General Hospital, with robust access controls. Nobody except the research team will have access to the responses.

Did participating affect my care in any way?

No. Choosing whether or not to participate did not affect the care or services participants received from any health care providers in any way.

Was participation voluntary?

Yes. Taking part was voluntary, and the survey asked participants to confirm that they agreed to participate before continuing to the questions.

Who could participate and how long did it take?

The survey was open to people age 13 or older who lived in Elliot Lake or a surrounding community within 100 kilometres. The average completion time was 15 minutes and 15 seconds.
